One man from Oregon decided it was time to quit his day job and follow his dreams of sailing to Hawaii and the world. He is now gaining attention on social media as he documents his journey with his cute pet cat. Another interesting aspect of his voyage is that he has no prior experience.
Oliver Widger’s career in the corporate world came to a halt when he realized he was ready to achieve his long-desired dream of sailing the world. He disliked the monotonous pattern of his 9 to 5 job, which he had to do with a worsening cervical spine injury. This prompted Widger to quit, cash in his 401k, and buy a sailboat.
Widger Will Sail From Oregon To Hawaii
Ten months before his trip began, Oliver Widger learned to sail and fixed up his boat for the journey. Despite the preparation, the beginning of his voyage was also the first time he rode on the Pacific Ocean. The man set sail for Hawaii from Oregon with his little companion, Phoenix.
Widger initially planned his trip for April 2026. He wanted to learn more about sailing and be better prepared for it. However, the poor state of his spine injury made him change plans. He believed time was of the essence, and he could become paralyzed before fulfilling his goals.
Since day one, Widger and Phoenix have been sharing their experiences on the Pacific Ocean with social media users. Widger’s Instagram account of over 650,000 followers shows scores of videos of him and Phoenix at sea, while admirers share tips and words of encouragement in the comment section. In a post made by Pubity on Instagram, Oliver Widger addressed netizens:
“There are no rules.”
“I’m fully invested in this dude’s story,” someone wrote. “This guy is epic. I love the unfiltered awkward commentary and sincerely hope he makes it,‘ another person shared. A third user expressed concern, writing, ‘I’m no expert, but I believe a little sailboat in the ocean is a bit unusual and dangerous.“
Fans on Reddit also shared their well-wishes and two cents as the journey continues. According to the last video on his Instagram page, Oliver Widger is on day eight of his trip to Hawaii.
