With various scams out there attempting to steal our information over email, phone, and more, it pays to be careful. One woman from Ohio is bringing attention to a scam that involves cell phone cables. The scam involving cables that are now being called OMG cables is one that you should especially watch out for. This is especially true if you’re having people in your house you don’t know very well. Or worse, someone you had over for a date.
According to TikToker ohio_smokeshow, the cable scam goes like this—a person who has access to your home leaves behind what seems like a harmless object. In this case, a smartphone charger and a charging block. It could be an ‘OMG’ cable, named after what victims say when they realize they’ve been hacked. It’s designed to gain remote access to your network.
She explains, “People are weird, and they do weird s**t.” Tiktoker ohio_smokeshow recommends throwing charging cables and blocks away immediately if your date left it behind. “Don’t ask questions,” she says.
As things on the Internet go, some users were shocked to find out that this is a real thing. Others, upsettingly, victim-blamed by saying, “Thankfully I’m intelligent enough to not sleep around.” Totally uncalled for!
Tiktoker @ohio_smokeshow wasn’t a fan of this comment, and rightfully so. She then made a follow-up video saying, “I didn’t let a stranger into my house. A man I was in a relationship with did this.” Even if a one-night stand leads to someone leaving behind an OMG cable, that’s not the victim’s fault. That’s an insane breach of privacy. Not to mention illegal and downright creepy.
Another commenter wrote, “An OMG cord is super expensive and requires advanced knowledge to use so it’s not likely. But a charging block with a hidden camera is cheap and easy to use, so watch out for those.”
No matter what, it’s important to stay aware of any scams that could potentially put your personal life at risk. This is more than somebody leaving a hoodie at your house so they have an excuse to pick it up and see you again. The OMG cable has the potential to destroy your life in more ways than one.
