It’s hard to believe it’s been a year since the passing of the legendary Carrie Fisher. Even more surreal, seeing her in this month’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi. She was an incredible talent, certainly. But to her co-stars on set, she was an incredibly close friend. Her on-screen brother, Mark Hamill, will attest to that. And on the anniversary of her passing, he did just that. Hamill took to Twitter, posting a heartwarming tribute to the late actress, including a photo collage and hashtag that soon began trending as people spread their own tributes to a woman who meant a great deal to them.

There’s something poetic about Luke Skywalker stating that no one’s ever really gone. The hashtag was quickly picked up by the likes of names big and small. Even William Shatner posted his own tribute, including a photo that he and Fisher had taken together. The Nerdist’s tribute spoke to her dual role as both royalty and a general in the films, including a collage of her in the iconic role in both the original and new trilogy. And yet more honored her purely as the woman she was off-camera – an outspoken role model for girls and women everywhere.

To us, she’ll always be royalty. 🙏 You are missed, General. #CarrieOnForever pic.twitter.com/SVKlARBy3n

Carrie Fisher’s passing was the result of a heart attack. Though if she were to have her way, she’d say that she “drowned in moonlight, strangled by her own bra.” The sting of her passing still lingers for many. Especially being so freshly reminded of it, thanks to the new movie.  Carrie Fisher touched a lot of people in many different ways. She was obviously best known for her role in Star Wars. But more than that, she was a sought-after script doctor, a writer, and a champion for mental health. She spoke openly about her own struggles and gave people with similar problems someone to relate and aspire to. Carrie Fisher became one with the force a year ago. But she’s never truly gone. The force is always there.
