A Maine Citizen Tried to Buy a Car, but got Racially Profiled Instead ‘It’s Really Hard To Prove Racial Profiling’

The behavior was strange

Customer service should be the most important thing for any business, but some people let their biases be more critical. For example, a car dealership employee in Maine called the police on a potential customer. I understand she may have had second thoughts, but the potential buyer believes it was more racial profiling.

Got the police called on me for trying to buy a car at a dealership

Redditor Radiant_Project_5865 tells r/legaladvice how they were thrilled to have some extra money for themselves. This would be money OP could spend to finally upgrade their old ’09 Jeep Cherokee to a 2024 Jeep Cherokee they saw at a nearby dealership. The conflict began when OP visited the car dealership. The saleswoman asked for their information, but OP stated that a credit was not necessary since they would be paying upfront. Not only that, but what “sealed the deal” was that OP “told her that I could wire the amount”. The car dealership saleswoman gave OP a look and, after saying she would be back in a moment, walked away, which was surely when she called the police because 20 minutes later, two Maine officers arrived to talk to OP.

Fortunately, the officers were very nice to OP, first chatting with them, and then asking for their ID. Of course, OP knew the situation was strange and wondered if there was a problem, to which the officers replied no. So, OP gave his ID for one of the cops to walk away to check over the walkie-talkie. All while the saleswoman watched from afar. The other officer continued talking to OP and asking him various questions for 30 minutes, until they gave him back his ID and left the scene.

The whole interaction, plus the attitude of the employee, was what made OP believe that it was all racial profiling on her part, as they added that they are African American. So OP thinks they can do something against the dealership, to which the users responded with:

I had a similar incident and went to an attorney. It’s really hard to prove racial profiling. They recommend I take my business elsewhere but file a formal complaint with the company.
I opted not to give my money to the dealership. Wrote a complaint to the company and bought my SUV flat out at another place. The other dealership was awesome, I told them my story. The GM was so cool, he offered to call the previous place to inform them I indeed bought my vehicle in full. I declined.

The worst part is that after the cops left, the employee came back. She came back to see if OP wanted to sign the papers to buy the truck. So OP left the place.
