Paying rent is rarely a pleasant experience. Most people just want to get it over with every month, but sometimes landlords or rental companies make things more complicated than they need to be. For one Las Vegas resident, that experience took a serious turn for the worse after dealing with Invitation Homes. If you’re unfamiliar, Invitation Homes is a large property management company that offers single-family homes for rent across the U.S. Reddit user ga2lv had been renting a house from them in Las Vegas, Nevada, for over five years without any major problems. That changed recently when things suddenly took a turn.

WARNING ABOUT INVITATION HOMES

In a Reddit post, ga2lv explained that Invitation Homes is now trying to evict them under what they believe are fraudulent circumstances. According to the post, the Las Vegas resident had always paid rent on time until recently falling on some financial hardship. Despite that, they never had any complaints, rarely called maintenance, and considered themselves a responsible tenant who genuinely cared for their home.

The trouble began when ga2lv started receiving water bills that were shockingly high, over $1,000 per month. When the Las Vegas resident reached out to Invitation Homes for answers, they were told it was likely a maintenance issue and that the charges didn’t need to be paid right away. The company assured them the problem would be sorted out eventually and, in the meantime, instructed ga2lv to pay rent via money order so the funds would be applied strictly to rent and not the disputed fees.

However, despite following those instructions, ga2lv claims the company redirected thousands of dollars from their rent payments toward the water charges without saying a word. This left their actual rent unpaid, and the balance reportedly ballooned to over $4,000. Now, Invitation Homes is allegedly using that outstanding amount as a reason to evict them.

“They’ve put me in an impossible position,” ga2lv wrote. “I can’t afford to fight them in court, I can’t afford to move, and I can’t afford to pay $4,000 for something I already paid.” In the post, the Redditor voiced frustration at being pushed to the brink of losing their home, all while working 50 to 60 hours a week and doing exactly what the company instructed. They ended their post with a clear and emotional warning to others: “Do not rent from Invitation Homes. They are thieves.”

Many Reddit users suggested that user ga2lv should contact a lawyer to confront Invitation Homes. Several recommended that they keep all email correspondence with the company as evidence, especially since the messages allegedly state that the resident was not responsible for the water fees and that the company was “working on removing them.”
