While MAGA supporters may believe that Trump and ICE are always on their side, that’s not necessarily the case. Incidents of racial profiling have been on the rise, and many people with skin tones darker than “pasty white” are finding themselves in unnecessary trouble. One recent example involves a couple from San Diego, California. George Doilez and his wife Esmeralda, recently had a run-in with Border Patrol agents while they were driving around the Boulevard area.
Apparently, they looked “suspicious” enough that agents decided to follow them in an unmarked SUV. The couple was actually on their way to a dental appointment but decided to take a scenic drive around Jacumba and the surrounding area. That’s when Border Patrol made their move, putting on a siren and ordering them to pull over.
George, a longtime San Diego resident, was stunned. He was even more unsettled to see the agents wearing face masks, which he said made them look more like criminals than officers. Initially, he refused to let them search his car, insisting that the agents had no reasonable suspicion or legal justification for the stop. This was his first time being harassed by Border Patrol in all his years living in the U.S., and he couldn’t shake the suspicion that they were targeted simply because of their skin color.
What made the encounter sting even more was the couple’s voting history. George admitted that both he and Esmeralda had voted for Trump in 2020 and again in 2024, believing his promises about law and order. Now, thanks to the very Trump administration policies they once defended, they were on the receiving end of what they called an unpleasant and humiliating experience.
While the couple described themselves as traumatized, online reactions weren’t exactly sympathetic. Many commenters felt a sense of schadenfreude watching Trump voters experience policies they once supported. One user wrote, “Having the day that they voted for! 🤣” Others criticized the couple for their previous support of Trump, questioning their expectations given his well-known, controversial views.
Some urged the couple to take action rather than just complain. “Cool story bro. Now jump into the protests with the rest of us and start cleaning up the mess you helped make,” one person wrote.
Others remained skeptical that this incident would change their political stance. “Reporters really need to ask the follow-up question of whether or not they’ll ever vote Republican again. I won’t believe they feel true remorse until they understand this isn’t just Trump,” another commented. For now, the San Diego couple is left grappling with the irony that their trust in Trump may have directly contributed to their ordeal.
