The first gameplay for the highly anticipated CD Projekt Red developed Cyberpunk 2077 has just been revealed to the public. Early Monday morning, CD Projekt Red began a stream showing lines of encrypted code being written out, teasing the upcoming reveal. Fans who waited patiently were met with not only a treat but a full-on feast worth of new information.

The gameplay demo lasted a whole 48 minutes and dove in depth on a myriad of gameplay aspects. There’s a lot to unpack in this demo, which can be viewed below, but here are some of the highlights.

For starters, the character customization options are extremely deep in Cyberpunk 2077. Players can chose from a male or female protagonist and customize them to their liking. Character customization beyond the physical was discussed in the demo as well. Players have the option to choose the characters clothing which effects stats, choose dialogue options that drastically change gameplay scenarios, and even chose the characters sexuality. This apparently only scratches the surface, as CD Projekt Red seems committed to making the RPG systems in Cyberpunk 2077 as deep as possible.

In Cyberpunk 2077, players will play an active role in what happens in the world. Every decision has a rippling effect on what takes place. The setting, Night City, is an ever changing, highly populated sandbox. One impressive scene shows the main protagonist, V, walking through a densely filled area. It’s astonishing to see how many non playable characters are able to be crammed into the city streets. It gives the world an alive feeling that we haven’t seen fully realized in many games. We also got to see one of our main ways of traversing the city, vehicles. V has a stylized, futuristic sports car that will be used for getting from mission to mission quickly as well as being implemented into random combat scenarios.

Lastly, lets take a look at combat. In the Cyberpunk 2077 gameplay demo ,we saw a few different combat scenarios. The first one showed early game mechanics including a time slowdown mechanic, scanning enemies and the level of environmental destruction the game has to offer. As the demo progressed, abilities that only highly leveled up characters will be able to obtain were unlocked and shown. These include guns that will be able to shoot and bounce bullets off of walls to hit enemies behind cover as well as one that can shoot around corners and track enemies. High level movement allows for players to warp forward, and double jump. A new melee weapon that gives V two attachable blades to slice and dice her way through enemies was also shown.

This demo was the one shown earlier this year at E3 and Gamescom behind closed doors, and if the rumblings from those who had seen it were to be believed, the gameplay lives up to the hype. Cyberpunk 2077 is still a ways away, but may be sooner than many expected. Last week at Gamescom, the producer on the game stated that Cyberpunk 2077 was playable front to back in it’s entirety, so fans hopefully shouldn’t have to wait too long to get their hands on the final project. Until then, be sure to check back to The Nerd Stash for all the news on Cyberpunk 2077.
