For starters, no, this has nothing to do with Wonder Woman. At least not directly. DC Comics just announced at New York Comic Con that they’ll be starting a new imprint. It goes by “Wonder Comics” and is curated by Brian Michael Bendis. The imprint is teen-focused, revolving around many of DC’s younger characters – chief among them being Young Justice, largely in its original form.

It’s no secret that the team of Justice League trainees is extremely popular. Their animated series, while vastly different from its source material, was so beloved that when it was canceled, the outpouring from fans got it a third season, coming to DC Universe. The image also features the likes of other long-missing DC characters, such as the Wonder Twins, as well as older iterations of major staples like Superboy and Wonder-Girl.

As for Bendis’s involvement with Wonder Comics, Dan DiDio was quoted in an interview, saying:

People have been asking for them over and over again. But we don’t want to bring them back and have nothing to do with them. It wasn’t until Brian came back and said he wanted to do Young Justice that we decided it was time to bring them back.

Bendis spearheading this makes sense, in some contexts. Most longtime comic fans know him as a Marvel writer, of course. He currently writes Action Comics for DC. But when he was at Marvel, he wrote for and created a handful of young heroes, to varying degrees of success. Perhaps most famous among them was his run on Ultimate Spider-Man – especially the later decision to replace Peter Parker with Miles Morales. And later he tried to catch the same lightning in a bottle with the introduction of Riri Williams – better known as Ironheart – to the Iron Man mythos.

The continuity status of the Wonder Comics imprint is odd, due to the incarnations of these characters presented in the image accompanying the announcement. But since Rebirth, DC’s played fast and loose with continuity. So it’s not that farfetched to believe these versions of these characters could exist, right now.

The creative teams for the new books are also known. Bendis himself is set to helm the Young Justice title with Patrick Gleason. He also fills the role of co-writer on Naomi, along with David Walker, with Jamal Campbell illustrating. The Wonder Twins book comes from Mark Russel and Stephen Byrne. That leaves Sam Humphries and Joe Quinones to take the reins on Dial H for Hero. The Wonder Comics imprint launches in early 2019 with Young Justice.
