Sweet Christmas. Just one week after news broke that Netflix had chosen to pull the plug on Iron Fist, Deadline has confirmed that the streaming service has decided to do the same with Luke Cage.

Netflix and Marvel Television put out this statement on the news:

“Unfortunately, Marvel’s Luke Cage will not return for a third season. Everyone at Marvel Television and Netflix is grateful to the dedicated showrunner, writers, cast and crew who brought Harlem’s Hero to life for the past two seasons, and to all the fans who have supported the series.”

Luke Cage had just finished up its second season, which ended on a unique cliffhanger that could have potentially flipped the entire series’ dynamic on its head. We gave Luke Cage season two four out of five stars, saying that it was a “vast improvement on the first due to better villains and a more complex Hero for Hire.”.

Something to watch out for now is the status of the remaining Marvel Netflix shows. Jessica Jones and Daredevil are likely to return for new seasons. The Punisher season two is also on the way shortly. After that, everything is up in the air regarding all of the Marvel Netflix properties.

It is possible that Netflix thought both Iron Fist and Luke Cage just weren’t good fits for their own solo runs. The duo are best friends in the comics and form the Heroes for Hire. The Marvel Netflix universe has been building to this relationship for a while now with The Defenders and Luke Cage season two so there is a chance that Netflix brings these two back for an ensemble spinoff series somewhere down the road.

What are your thoughts on Luke Cage? Did it deserve a third season? Would you want to see the characters return in a Heroes for Hire spinoff? Let us know in the comments below!
