Any hopes of that huge single-player Star Wars experience many had hoped for have been wiped out today. EA has officially canceled the development of their open-world Star Wars game.

Being originally announced back in 2017, EA Vancouver had been responsible for the development of this open world game. EA Vancouver is best known for their works on several of EA’s successful sports titles including FIFA and Madden. They have also contributed to the likes of Battlefront alongside Battlefield’s DICE and Burnout developers Criterion Games.

This Star Wars game was originally a Visceral Games works before EA shut them down on October 17, 2017. EA Vancouver had already been co-developing the title but had the full rights handed over to them upon Visceral’s shutdown.

The original concept art for Visceral’s Star Wars game unveiled back at E3 2016. This would later be taken over by EA Vancouver and now canceled forever.

The reason for the canceling isn’t completely clear but an article on Kotaku suggests that EA wanted something they could release sooner rather than later. Perhaps the overall ambition of this open world Star Wars game was deemed too large to support anymore.

No footage of the canceledย game was ever shown and perhaps with the lack of news since its initial unveil way back at E3 2016 under Visceral, this was a long time coming. EA never seemed to quite be fully invested into a title where providing a game as a service wasn’t necessarily viable.

We’ve seen countless proof of the insane profits that are makeable from microtransactions and there’s no doubt they are easier to implement in a traditional multiplayer title. Even if that’s the last thing most of us want in our games.

EA made the following formal statement earlier today:

“Thereโ€™s been speculation overnight about one of our Star Wars projects. As a natural part of the creative process, the great work by our team in Vancouver continues and will evolve into future Star Wars content and games. Weโ€™re fully committed to making more Star Wars games, weโ€™re very excited about Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order from Respawn, and weโ€™ll share more about our new projects when the time is right.“
