Tomorrowland managed to push through for the top spot at the box office this weekend. Unfortunately the sci-fi movie directed by academy-award winner Brad Bird only brought in a disappointing $32.1 million as the movie was tracking north of $40 million last week. The movie opened to mix reception from critics and it was shown this past weekend as the movie wasn’t able to fight off those reviews.
Pitch Perfect 2Â dropped to second with a take of $30.8 million which was a decent hold for the comedy which opened last week to incredible reception. The acapella comedy has already reached $109.5 million and should continue to work as counter-programming over the next couple weeks and could pass $200 million domestically by the end of its run.
Mad Max: Fury Road also held well in its second week as the movie brought in $24.8 million to a total of $88.2 million. The George Miller directed action film has been praised by both critics and fans and has been ranked as one of the top movies this year. With a competitive slate of movies set to release over the next weeks, Mad Max: Fury Road could lose part of its audience though it should bring in upwards $160 million domestically and should dominate oversees.
Newcomer, Poltergeist opened at the fourth spot with $22.6 million, the horror film should finish with around $50 million. Avengers: Age of Ultron continued to bring in the fans as the movie brought in $21.7 million in its fourth weekend to a total of $404.8 million. Avengers: Age of Ultron will most likely finish shy of $500 million which would make the sequel bring in $123 million less than its predecessor.
Next weekend, San Andreas & Aloha release. Check out later this week for our box office predictions.
