Borderlands 3 will have microtransactions according to the team at Gearbox Software. Paul Sage, the creative director, announced during the live stream showing gameplay of Borderlands 3 there will cosmetic microtransactions sold. These cosmetics consist of different skins and heads for your choice of character. Randy Pitchford, the CEO of Gearbox Software stated the game will have microtransactions but without much detail to what the microtransactions entail. When confronted about this, Randy Pitchford spoke on the differences between the microtransactions for Borderlands 3 versus what is typically seen and meant by microtransactions for today’s games. As he puts it the cosmetics you can purchase in the game aren’t the same as the “F2P,” style of transactions players is already purchasing for first-person games. This, among some other issues, were discussed after the live steam event of the gameplay.

2K, the publisher behind the Borderlands series, was asked about the ways they are monetizing the game.

“Players will have the option to purchase certain cosmetic items like character, vehicle, and weapon skins, but none of these purchases would be considered pay-to-win or impacting on the gameplay, like weapons or actual gear”

They say the cosmetics will not be a pay to win system to get ahead in the game and will only affect appearance, nothing else. Borderlands 3 will include DLC much like how it was with Borderlands 2. Borderlands 2 brought about 50 DLC drops for players to purchase. Borderlands 2 didn’t have any microtransactions just the DLC drops. With an interview with a creative lead at Gearbox Software, it was said they wouldn’t chop the story of Borderlands into pieces and sell it to the players. This was too much relief after hearing about the microtransactions from the live stream. Tell us what you think is the right path for Borderlands 3 to take in the comments below!
