Ryan Gosling‘s Oscar nomination is a testament to the amazing work he put into Barbie. The actor was nominated for his role as Ken, Barbie’s boyfriend, in the 2023 film. Besides Gosling’s category, the comedy/fantasy movie bagged seven other nominations. But despite the feat, it was surprising to see Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig’s names missing from their individual categories. Robbie played the lead character, Barbie, while Gerwig directed the blockbuster. Shortly after the nominations list came in, a disappointed Gosling shared his thoughts on the Oscar snub. In the wake of the actor’s response, fans hailed Gosling for sticking up for his co-star.

Gosling shared his thoughts on what he believed was an oversight in the 2024 Oscars nomination process. Recently, Ryan Gosling got an Oscar nomination in the Best Supporting Actor category for his role as Ken in Barbie. While it was an honor for the actor, his joy wasn’t complete. Many, including Gosling, had hoped to see Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig’s names in the Best Actress and Best Director categories. Unfortunately, the Barbie lead actress and director’s names were missing from the categories. The snub didn’t sit right with the actor, who issued a statement expressing his disappointment.

Gosling began by revealing he was honored and proud to be nominated alongside his talented colleagues. However, he noted:

“But there is no Ken without Barbie, and there is no Barbie movie without Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie, the two people most responsible for this history-making, globally-celebrated film.”

The Canadian actor further said that no recognition would be possible for anyone on the film without the duo’s input.

“To say that I’m disappointed that they are not nominated in their respective categories would be an understatement…Their work should be recognized along with the other very deserving nominees,” Gosling shared.

Gosling’s statement quickly spread across social media and sparked reactions from fans. On Reddit, many praised the actor for his response, calling it classy.

“What a class act,” one fan shared, while another commented:

“I don’t want to jinx it but Ryan seems to be the epitome of class time and time again.”

A third Redditor shared:

“That’s my Ken! If only more men could be like Ryan Gosling.”

Another fan quipped:

“He’s a classy guy. Lovely statement.”

Some other fans agreed with Gosling that Robbie and Gerwig should have been nominated.

“He’s right. I think a lot of people missed that point if it wasn’t for Margot and Greta then he wouldn’t have gotten this nomination,” a fan wrote.

Other fans noted there was no snub, as the names listed in the categories deserved to be there. Given Gosling’s statement, the upcoming Oscars is one to look forward to.
