In 1995, Star Wars fans were graced with the release of Star Wars: Dark Forces. The game is a fantastic Doom clone and features all of the best aspects of a classic boomer shooter. Over 25 years later, the game is finally getting its well-deserved remaster! Nightdive Studios will be spearheading the project. They are the creators of this year’s System Shock remake and plenty of other great FPS titles, so rest assured knowing that the Star Wars remaster is in good hands.

Nightdive Studios has announced nothing but great news regarding the remaster. The project will be completed using Nightdive’s Kex Engine, allowing it to truly spread its wings. Modernized controls, 120 FPS, and 4k resolution are just a few of the upgrades to expect with the upcoming title. Similarly, all in-game cutscenes have been redone, though many agree they look somewhat jarring.

The Star Wars: Dark Forces remaster is confirmed to cost between $20 and $30. This comes straight from the developer via an IGN interview, where they confirmed that the game will be released on PC, Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo Switch. Also, in said interview, Nightdive Studios’ Larry Kuperman insisted that they intend to replicate the feeling of playing the game in the 90’s.

“Our mantra is always about preservation. And you don’t preserve things by changing them.”

Is the Star Wars: Dark Forces Remaster Canon?

After Disney acquired LucasFilm, Star Wars: Dark Forces was rendered non-canon. Along with its sequel, it was moved to the expanded universe known as ‘Legends.’ While unlikely, it is possible that this upcoming remaster could once again canonize the events of the game.

If this upcoming remaster interests you, check out Bethesda’s latest remaster of Quake 2. Nightdive Studios also completed the Quake 2 remaster, a real work of art.
