Focus Home Interactive has released Patch 1.09 today for A Plague Tale: Innocence, bringing some excellent new features to a great game. The patch coincides with A Plague Tale‘s formal jump to PS5 and Xbox Series X|S architecture. It will chomp up roughly 42GB worth of hard drive space on Xbox Series X, with PS5 owners lucking out a bit at 31.5GB instead.

Patch Notes 1.09

  • 4K UHD (on Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5)
  • 60 FPS
  • 3D audio support
  • Xbox One & PS4 versions can be upgraded for free!
  • In addition, we haven’t forgotten about Switch players: for the first time, you will be able to play A Plague Tale: Innocence in Cloud Version using Nintendo’s Cloud Streaming technology. Make sure to play the free demo first to guarantee your connection is good enough!

Putting Things Into Perspective

A Plague Tale: Innocence Patch 1.09 may not seem amazing at first blush. It can be easy to dismiss single-player game patches sometimes if no additional content is included. But for A Plague Tale: Innocence, there is probably no greater “content” conceivable than the chance to replay the medieval emotional rollercoaster at an increased frame rate and dazzling 4K display. Frame rate is often talked about in the gaming world without attention to why exactly it matters so much.

A good example of how much better a locked 60 FPS game can feel is Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade, June’s PS5-boosted re-release of 2020’s incredible RPG. It’s not that the PS4 version was by any means unplayable, but once they’ve had a taste for the silky-smooth swiftness of moment-to-moment gameplay in Intergrade, it can be tough for some folks to ever go back. With this boost, A Plague Tale: Innocence Patch 1.09 ensures the game will feel more responsive to your inputs, and the world around you won’t feel as dizzying. With so many rats around, that’s a heck of a help.

The uptick in image quality afforded by A Plague Tale: Innocence Patch 1.09’s 4k resolution bump is simple enough to appreciate, but this bit about Nintendo’s Cloud Streaming technology is worth calling attention toward. For those who are unfamiliar, Nintendo has begun deploying the requisite programming to allow developers to bring more graphically demanding video games to the console with the caveat that players will need terrific internet speeds or else the whole thing falls apart.

After being granted the chance to check out whether or not one’s connection speed is suitable for the process, the choice is made about whether or not to purchase an “Access Pass” to continue playing the game. What this means for Switch owners who wish to dabble in A Plague Tale: Innocence is that the possibility exists as of now, but if your country’s internet speeds are too low (or you live somewhere with cruel data caps), you’ll be better off grabbing the game elsewhere.

A Plague Tale Requiem Hugo in an Enclosed Space

There Are More Plague-Related Tales to Come

Finished A Plague Tale: Innocence and thirsting for more dreary drama? At this year’s Xbox E3 event, Microsoft unveiled A Plague Tale: Requiem for Xbox Series X|S and PC. Returning lead characters Amicia and Hugo, will find themselves in all sorts of trouble again, this time in an even “prettier” setting. (And by prettier, I mean the visuals are outstanding in their depiction of places I never, ever want to visit.) Check out the trailer before you leave!
