For an indie film studio to go more mainstream, it needs a bigger IP and well-respected auteurs. A24 and Hideo Kojima have announced a partnership to make a Death Stranding movie. The live-action adaptation has no casting, so it is uncertain if Norman Reedus, Mads Mikkelsen, Léa Seydoux, Guillermo del Toro, or Margaret Qualley will return for the film.

The game was the first project from Kojima Productions after the beloved filmmaker left Konami to start his own company. Released in 2019, it followed courier Sam Porter Bridges (Norman Reedus) in an apocalyptic United States that has been ravaged by invisible creatures known as BTs.

“A24 was born into this world about 10 years ago, their presence is singular within the industry, they are like no other. The films they are delivering to the world are high in quality and very innovative. I… pic.twitter.com/4CiO8F1HUF

In a post on X, formerly Twitter, the video game creator made a statement about the collaboration that features the film studio’s logo with a take on the game’s logo. He talked about the studio’s identity being “like no other.” He praised the films for being “high in quality and innovative.”

Hideo Kojima also wrote about the vision for the Death Stranding movie from A24. While he does not give away details, it will not be a “direct translation of the game.” Instead, fans of the game and people who never heard of it will be able to enjoy the film.

Now, we are making a Death Stranding movie together. There are a lot of “game adaptation films” out there but what we are creating is not just a direct translation of the game. The intention is that our audience will not only be fans of the games, but our film will be for anyone who loves cinema. We are creating a Death Stranding universe that has never been seen before, achievable only through the medium of film, it will be born.

The adaptation was announced in 2022. Since then, it was quiet as we awaited more details. While we have not been given more, we know it will introduce new ideas and characters to the universe.

The studio is known for making an eclectic variety of different genres. In recent years, it has funded creative horror films like The Witch, Talk to Me, and Midsommar. The studio’s films, like Lady Bird, Everything Everywhere All at Once, and The Iron Claw, have gained traction during award seasons to show it can do more than just give audiences nightmares.

A24 has made the Death Stranding logo shirt that Hideo Kojima wore in the post above available to purchase in its store.
