Who doesn’t love Alfred Hitchcock? Whether it be The Birds, Vertigo or Psycho, Hitchcock was truly the master of suspense he claimed to be. Though he’s since passed on, his legacy and films have gone on to inspire some of the best directors in the industry. John Carpenter, Brian De Palma, David Fincher and even the last Wes Craven are clearly inspired by his craft. M. Night Shymalan was too, for whatever that’s worth. In any case, there’s no doubt that his legacy has made an impact. Now, his legacy continues further as a new TV series, inspired by the master of suspense, is currently in development.

Hitchcock’s estate has forged a deal with Universal Cable Productions to create an anthology series titled Welcome to Hitchcock. Of course, this is not the first time Hitchcock has come to television. In fact, this marks the third occasion this has happened. Alfred Hitchcock Presents ran from 1955-1962, hosted by Hitchcock himself, running for 262 episodes. Immediately following that came to The Alfred Hitchcock Hour, also hosted by Hitchcock, which only ran for three years, ending in 1965. Following Hitchcock’s death, a reboot of Alfred Hitchcock Presents was released in 1985 and ran until 1989.

Each season will feature a single ongoing mystery or crime, inspired by iconic films like The Birds (1963) and Psycho (1960). This makes me happy. Not just because I’m a fan of Hitchcock but because of my disgusts for remakes, especially regarding horror films. Lest we forget the horrendous remake of Psycho. For years, classics of suspense and horror have been getting the remake treatment and 90% of them are terrible. I would never want another Alfred Hitchcock movie remade as another movie. However, a television show that pays tribute and honors this man’s brilliant craftsmanship? That I can get behind 100%. I’m actually curious to see how they’ll pull this off.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Dawn Olmstead, executive vice president of development at Universal Cable Productions, spoke up about plans for the show.

“Long after his death, Alfred Hitchcock continues to be one of the most celebrated directors and visionaries in the world, a master manipulator of the macabre. We’re honored that the Hitchcock Estate has put its trust in our studio to pay homage to his work.”

Joining the project is Chris Columbus, along with his production company, 1492 Pictures/Ocean Blue Entertainment. Chris Columbus is no stranger to big projects, having directed Home Alone and the first two Harry Potter features. Reports confirm that he will direct Welcome to Hitchcock and serve as one of its executive producers.
