All Dragon’s Dogma 2 Vocations Explained

RIP Mystic Knight and Assassin.

Dragon’s Dogma 2 is shaping up to be a worthy sequel. However, it seems the game is going to implement some major changes to its class or Vocation system. Naturally, this would throw off a lot of theory-crafters. Thus, we’re here to explain the Dragon’s Dogma 2 Vocations as they are now more subtly but significantly different compared to Dragon’s Dogma vocations.

Dragon’s Dogma 2 is still a familiar playground for most RPG veterans, thankfully. The Dragon’s Dogma 2 vocations, for that matter, presumably come in grouped classifications, much like the predecessor. The simplest Vocations fall under Basic, followed by Advanced, and finally, Hybrid Vocations, which mix magic and physical combat.

Here are the current classes we know based on the trailers.

  • Basic Vocations
    • Fighter – Pretty straightforward as a class and focuses on physical damage with the typical sword-and-shield setup.
    • Mage – Mage is also straightforward though for magical support disciplines instead.
    • Thief – Thief is a new class though it is most similar to Strider in the predecessor, using dual daggers and fast attacks in the heat of battle.
    • Archer – Archer is the ranged physical class and likely functions similarly to Ranger.
  • Advanced/Hybrid Vocations
    • Mystic Spearhead – Seemingly an Advanced or Hybrid class that combines magic for long-range combat and physical attacks for close-range.
    • Magick Archer – A hybrid class for ranged Vocations in the original, the Magick Archer also excels in ranged damage but with an elemental or mystical twist.
    • Sorcerer – An Advanced version of the Basic Mage Vocation with less focus on support and more on offense.
    • Trickster – It’s not clear yet where the recently unveiled Trickster Vocation falls under, but it’s a new class. Moreover, there’s a big chance it falls under the Hybrid type since it appears to combine the strengths of both Thief and Mage.
    • Warrior – Like the Sorcerer, it’s a more Advanced version of the Fighter, capable of wielding bigger weapons.

Original Dragon’s Dogma Vocations

For comparison, we’ve also detailed the Vocations in the original Dragon’s Dogma. There are also nine of them.

You’ll notice that they also have a more coherent and clear “upgrade” progression.

  • Fighter (Basic)
  • Mage (Basic)
  • Strider (Basic)
  • Warrior (Advanced version of Fighter)
  • Ranger (Advanced version of Strider)
  • Sorcerer (Advanced version of Mage)
  • Mystic Knight (Hybrid)
  • Assassin (Hybrid)
  • Magick Archer (Hybrid)

Certain official promotions from Capcom, like the one below, indicate that there might only be nine Dragon’s Dogma 2 Vocations in total, much like the original Dragon’s Dogma.

If the shirt design is anything to go by, that means some old Vocations were axed or replaced. The Mystic Knight icon is notably missing from the cluster; meanwhile, Assassin seems to have been demoted to just a Basic Vocation. Take the shirt design with a grain of salt.
