While we’ve had dragons and Reavers, these two cultures aren’t as deep as the new one in Age of Wonders 4: Primal Fury, which includes new Primal Animals. These deities your people can worship provide a different playstyle for each player. Whether you want to focus on physical damage or freeze the land while riding mammoths, each one has its gimmick. And while all of them are entertaining to use, only a few stand as the best Primal Animals in this DLC.

All Primal Animals in Age of Wonders 4: Primal Fury From Worst to Best

Before everyone gets out their paws and claws to disagree, we want to clarify that each Primal Animal in Age of Wonders 4: Primal Fury is ‘furtastic.’ They all have similar mechanics, with only elements and favored terrains changing. However, after playing for a while, we discovered some were better or more entertaining to use. Ultimately, as we always say, it’s up to you to choose the one you’ll enjoy the most when playing. But without further ado, let’s see which Primal Animals reign the lands.

7. Mire Crocodile

While not awful, we had to put the Mire Crocodile at the bottom of the list as it doesn’t shine like other Primal Animals in Age of Wonders 4: Primal Fury. While it gains Swamps as its favored terrain and immunity to disease, its summon unit and bonuses aren’t as great. Sure, the movement boost doesn’t hurt, but there’s nothing much going for it aside from its immunity.

6. Ash Sabertooth

It hurts to see the Ash Sabertooth so far back on the list, especially since we used it in a few matches. However, we have good reasons for this ranking decision. First, Ashland maps are great but pretty uncommon; at least, we aren’t big fans of them. Second, the lack of immunity to fire is a bit strange, given that the Mire Crocodile also has it. The great thing about this Primal Animal is its summon unit. It’s a majestic sabertooth that can pounce at enemies and rip them apart mercilessly.

5. Tunneling Spider

The Tunneling Spider is a fantastic choice for those who love starting their matches underground…but that’s about it. Beyond that, it is also great if you want to focus on blight damage, and many builds can help with that. Still, staying underground most of the match doesn’t offer much benefit; unless you bring the fight to the depths of the map, you won’t see much action either.

4. Glacial Mammoth

The towering Glacial Mammoth is a fantastic Primal Animal in Age of Wonders 4: Primal Fury, but it is not the best. Conversely, its summon is the best in the culture; it’s a Primal Mammoth that can stomp and deal tons of frost damage. On top of that, the ability to build farms on snowy terrain is fantastic. Sadly, other deities overshadow this furry titan.

3. Storm Crow

The Storm Crow is an excellent choice when focusing on a magic-oriented culture and sticking to the Grasslands, a common biome you’ll encounter. Each Grassland province provides mana, which is great for those who want to get the upper hand by casting spells on the map or during a fight. Still, the summon isn’t something to write home about, hence why this Primal Animal is in third place.

2. Sylvan Wolf

The Sylvan Wolf was our first pick in the game, and we didn’t regret it. Each favored province gives more draft, which is great for those seeking war victory. The summon unit isn’t half bad due to its order damage. However, we feel that Primal Animal relies on specific builds, whereas our Number One pick can fit almost anywhere.

1. Dune Serpent

The Dune Serpent is the best Primal Animal in Age of Wonders 4: Primal Fury for one reason: its physical damage bonus. If you pair this deity with Orcoids, you’ll be killing left and right without the need for elemental damage. Besides, each favored province provides players with a bit of gold, which is always welcome to start your cities’ production and get more units. Overall, this is the one that we feel many players will use, thanks to its top-tier benefits.

Don’t hesitate to give all the Primal Animals a try. The ones we think aren’t the best might be for you. With the right strategy, culture, and traits, you can create a killing machine army capable of terraforming the land to your heart’s content. Speaking of which, we recommend building your animal’s temple as soon as possible to start shaping the land as you see fit.
