The very first choice you’ll make in Project Zomboid, after tweaking some of the sandbox settings, is picking a spawn point. Without mods, Build 42 offers five of them and places your character in any of the five towns of Knox Country. Initially, it might not seem like the most important decision, but it is. Depending on where you spawn, you’ll either have a lot of things near you guarded by hordes of zeds or a place with fewer zombies but also less loot. For that reason, we’ve made a quick guide to help you pick the right spawn location for your next playthrough. Don’t fret if you don’t pick the best one, though; you’ll eventually die, so you can just choose to visit them all.

[This guide contains information from the Unstable Build 42 and will be updated if the zone changes during the development process]

Before Build 42 hit Project Zomboid, we dare say this one was the most famous spawn point for one reason: its fire station. Build 41 players will remember that building as the sort of “meta” base of the game. It had everything. It was next to the police station, close to the forest to do some carpentry and woodcutting, and not that far from the penitentiary, which usually has a lot of great loot. However, with the release of the new unstable build, there are even better places out there. Still, Rosewood is great for those who want to find some of the new potential base locations that house blacksmith stations or are near large bodies of water.

4. West Point

West Point is still a fantastic spawn point in Project Zomboid due to its closeness to Louisville, many players’ endgame goal. Besides being close to the big city, West Point has some interesting landmarks and buildings survivors can visit. There’s a large police station and a gun store near Twiggy’s, this last one being an excellent base location and many more places to loot. One downside of spawning here is the absurd zombie population, which might be the downfall of many players. But if you manage to dodge the undead, you’ll find a place ripe for the picking.

3. Riverside

With the release of Build 42, many should consider spawning in Riverside due to it being so close to Brandenburg, another fantastic city to visit. Getting to it isn’t too hard, and as long as you get a vehicle, you should be there in a couple of hours. If you decide to stick to Riverside, though, there are also many great places to visit. There’s also a police station and a huge golf club with some interesting loot. However, the best thing about this place is the gated communities it has, which make for some of the best bases in the game. Closing them off will take a while, but the effort is worth it.

2. Echo Creek

Despite being the smallest spawn point in Project Zomboid, Echo Creek is an excellent choice, thanks to its gas station base. This building has everything you need to survive. A top floor full of house amenities, a basement with a lot of space, a garage with all the necessary tools, and an empty lot to place even more cars or do whatever you want with it. Plus, there’s a store next to it alongside a restaurant and two gas pumps in front of the building. And if that wasn’t enough, there’s a lot of space to practice the new animal husbandry skill if that’s something you want to do.

1. Muldraugh

The crown, however, has to go to Muldraugh. In truth, there aren’t a lot of things near it, and many might be against us placing it in the first spot, but this town has a surprising new coat of paint. Many of the old landmarks, like Cortman Medical and the police station, were hugely overhauled. They are bigger, better, and are even more excited to explore now. The former, for example, changed from a small house to a two-floor building with many rooms, a laboratory, and a medical office on the outside. Overall, Muldraugh might be a bit far away from other places, but it is certainly the most exciting place to explore in Build 42.
