Amazon Studios has announced plans to adapt The Fourth Wing with Michael B. Jordan’s Outlier Society. Based on Rebecca Yarros’ best-selling fantasy novel, the series was ordered pre-WGA strike as part of an overall deal between Yarros and Amazon MGM. Thematically speaking, the premise of The Fourth Wing seems to fit well with some of Amazon’s other high-flying fantasy series, and predictions for the series seem to be high based on the success of the original novel.

Released in May 2023, Rebecca Yarros’ The Fourth Wing is the first novel in the planned Empyrean series. The novel follows Violent Sorrengail, a 20-year-old girl who’s looking forward to a quiet life in the Scribe Quadrant surrounded by books and history. Unfortunately for her, Violet’s mother, a tough-as-talons general, forces her into the elite Basgiath War College, where cutthroat candidates compete to become dragon riders of Navarre.

The world inside the war college is ruthless, following just one rule: graduate or die. Violet’s smaller and scrawnier than most of her classmates and many of them would gladly kill her to take her place. And if her peers don’t kill her, the giant, fire-breathing dragons might.

Though Rebecca Yarros is an established author, The Fourth Wing is her first foray into fantasy, with her other works including the romance-drama series Flight & Glory and The Great And Precious Things, a family drama novel. The Iron Flame, the sequel to The Fourth Wing, is set to be released on November 7th. Additionally, speculation says that if The Fourth Wing‘s series does well, each of Yarros’ following novels could receive its own series.

Amazon Studios’ adaptation of The Fourth Wing will have Rebecca Yarros and Entangled Publishing’s Liz Pelletier serving as executive producers. Outlier Society, headed by Michael B. Jordan, will also executive produce the series. No further crew roles have been filled as of yet, though more information on the series should be available soon.
