It’s a brand new year, so get ready for another 12 months of shows getting axed. Yes, Disney has canceled American Born Chinese after one season. The fantasy series featured stars like Michelle Yeoh and Ke Huy Quan, who has recently revived his career with Everything Everywhere All at Once, Loki season 2, and the now-canceled Disney Plus show.

The series was created by Bob’s Burgers producer and writer Kelvin Yu. It was based on the graphic novel of the same name by Gene Luen Yang. It follows a teenager, Jin Wang (Ben Wang), who finds himself entangled in a fantastical conflict of Chinese myths. Or, at least, he thought they were supposed to be myths.

Disney Cancels American Born Chinese After Season 1 Debut Last Spring, But It Could Return

Deadline reports that 20th Television may shop the series to a new home. For now, fans of the series should brace for the story not continuing. The news comes seven months after its debut on the streaming service. It was about two months after Yeoh and Quan had won Oscars for their roles in the multiverse film that also starred Stephanie Hsu and Jamie Lee Curtis.

Since getting into the streaming business, Disney has had mixed results. It has found success with both seasons of Loki, WandaVision, Goosebumps, season 2 of The Santa Clauses, and High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, which is its longest-running series with four seasons. Beyond American Born Chinese getting canceled, the company has been scrambling on its plans, which has included scrapping productions like Doogie Kamealoha M.D. and The Spiderwick Chronicles, which Roku purchased.
