Obsidian Entertainment’s Avowed has introduced a new party of companions that the protagonist can travel with and that players can salivate over. Just like most other games that have companions you can switch out, there are typically other things you can do with them like train, learn about their backstories, and even romance! To ensure you get the most out of every companion, I’ve created the ultimate guide that includes everything you need to know about them.
Complete Avowed Companion Guide
Four companions journey with the godlike through Avowed. You’ll meet a few temporary companions during specific quests, but those will leave at the end of them. The companions you can have on your team are:
- Kai
- Marius
- Giatta
- Yatzli
Kai

Kai will be your first companion when you arrive in Paradis. He is an aumaua with greenish-blue skin and shark-like teeth. Besides being my favorite companion, Kai is a sharpshooter who happens to be the voice of reason in more tense conversations and decisions. You can also partake in special training with Kai after you’ve talked to him at camp a few times and even pursue a romance with him.
Unlocking Kai’s Training
The only way to unlock training with Kai is to talk with him as many times as possible at camp throughout the story. After a while, you can select the dialogue option ‘You mentioned training together.’ When you speak with him, you’ll get the chance to increase one of three different stats depending on your dialogue options.
Dialogue Option | Stat |
---|---|
Top Option | Two Constitution Points |
Middle Option | Two Might Points |
Bottom Option | One Might Point and One Constitution Point |
How to Romance Kai
Kai is the only companion you can romance in Avowed. To start your way down the path to his heart, you must begin Battle Scars, his companion quest. Every time he turns to you for advice on the quest, ensure that you choose options that comfort him. After completing the quest, head to a camp and talk to Kai. Ask him a question, and if they are available, select either ‘I feel like we’ve really gotten to know each other, haven’t we?’
After that question, select the dialogue option, ‘I’ve come to really care about you’ followed by ‘Kai, I’m saying that I have feelings for you.’ This exchange doesn’t result in any changes in-game, but some of the images during the cinematic at the end of the game will change.
Best Abilities for Kai
I’m going specifically by the abilities I chose for Kai because they worked well for me through my journey. Companion ability points that I earned for him were dumped into Fire and Ice and Second Wind.
- Fire and Ice – Using his gun, Kai shoots and stuns enemies for ten seconds. As it levels up, he will be able to ignite targets, increase the amount of stun health, and reduce its cooldown by 50%.
- Second Wind – With a cooldown of two minutes, the ability allows Kai to revive himself when he’s at zero, restoring 50% of his health. As you level this ability up, he will be able to earn back 75% of his health, gain a temporary burst of Attack Speed, and the ability to reset all other ability cooldowns for Kai.
Marius

Marius is a tough nut to crack. He’s a stern dwarf who relies on nature to train and resents anything related to animacy. He’s a little right-leaning and takes a long time to trust others. Unlike Kai, you cannot romance Marius.
Unlocking Marius’ Training
To unlock training with Marius, you need to talk to him about his past. Even though he will consistently shoot down any of your questions, it will help immensely when you reach the final area of the game, Galawain’s Tusks. There, you’ll be able to complete Marius’ companion quest, Chorus of the Lost. It’s only after that that Marius will open up to you and have training as a dialogue option.
Dialogue Option | Stat |
---|---|
Top Option | Two Constitution Points |
Middle Option | Two Dexterity Points |
Bottom Option | One Might Point and One Constitution Point |
Best Abilities for Marius
The two abilities I thought best to put Marius’ ability points into are Binding Roots and Heart Seeker.
- Binding Roots – Binding Roots allows Marius to Root enemies for eight seconds and has a 20-second cooldown. As you upgrade the ability, he will be able to stun trapped enemies, trap multiple enemies, and deal Bleed Accumulation to those enemies.
- Heart Seeker – Heart Seeker gives Marius a ranged advantage in shooting faraway enemies. Eventually, he will be able to hit a secondary target, increase the damage dealt by the ability, and reduce its cooldown by 33%.
Giatta

Giatta joins you just after being banished from Fior mes Iverno. She’s an animancer who lost her parents in a horrific accident and swears to use animancy exclusively for good.
Unlocking Giatta’s Training
Unlike the earlier two, Giatta doesn’t have a quest you need to complete to begin training with her. In fact, you can begin training with her almost immediately after you recruit her. Just talk to her at camp and see if the dialogue option is available. If it isn’t, then I recommend talking to her more and talking to her about her past. Unfortunately, you cannot romance Giatta.
Dialogue Option | Stat |
---|---|
Top Option | Two Intellect Points |
Middle Option | Two Resolve Points |
Bottom Option | One Resolve Point and One Intellect Point |
Best Abilities for Giatta
In my playthrough, the best abilities for Giatta are Purification and Reconstruction.
- Purification – With this ability, Giatta can heal allies by 25% of their max health. As the ability progresses, she will be able to heal allies for 50%, knock back enemies, and increase damage reduction of allies by 20%.
- Reconstruction – With Reconstruction, all of Giatta’s attacks heal allies a little. By putting more points into the ability, Giatta can increase the health granted to allies by 20%, grant Temporary Health for allies at max health, and revive incapacitated allies.
Yatzli

Yatzli is a pink, furry Orlan who you recruit from Fior. She specializes in animancy almost exclusively and is quick on her feet. Unfortunately, she can be incredibly impatient at times.
Unlocking Yatzli’s Training
Like Giatta, she does not have a specific quest you need to complete to unlock her training. You can also ask Yatzli to train with you shortly after recruiting her. However, if you’re having trouble unlocking that option, then I recommend talking with her more at camp until it comes up.
Dialogue Option | Stat |
---|---|
Top Option | Two Perception Points |
Middle Option | Two Intellect Points |
Bottom Option | One Perception Point and One Intellect Point |
Best Abilities for Yatzli
The best abilities for Yatzli in my opinion are Essence Explosion and Blast.
- Essence Explosion – With Essence Explosion, Yatzli can invoke arcane power that explodes when it hits an enemy. Eventually, she can increase the size of the blast, deal fire damage, and reduce its cooldown by 33%.
- Blast – Blast allows Yatzli to burst into a small area, dealing damage. As more points are put into it, Yatzli will be able to deal Explosive Damage, increase the stun dealt to enemies, and have a chance to inflict elemental damage.
