Kate Kane, otherwise known as Batwoman, no doubt has a long roster of villains to fight over the course of her debut season, which began last Sunday on the CW.
However, an enemy she probably didn’t expect to fight was a displeased fandom. Recently, a whole host of angry viewers of theย Batwomanย pilot took to their keyboards and started typing their frustrations into theย Rotten Tomatoesย audience reviews section.
The accumulated negative scoring of the reviews lowered the ‘Audience Score’ to 10%. This is a direct contrast with the critics’ score which currently rests at 72%.
So, what exactly is wrong withย Batwomanย in the audience’s eyes? A gander through the multitude of comments on the site tells all…
Like the reactions to the first trailer for the show, many commenters were displeased with what they perceived to be ‘SJW’ pandering. Dustin G claimed the show is “diverse for the sake of it” with “crowd pandering as usual” while Omikron O thought that there was “Too much agenda politics not enough Batman“.
Other comments, however, criticized the acting as “wooden”, “with bad fight scenes”, while a lot of hate seems to be thrown towards Ruby Rose and CW shows in general. Scrolling through the hate-mine reveals that a lot of these reviews give the show one and one-and-a-half stars.
That isn’t to say thatย Batwomanย doesn’t have her supporters. Amongst the barrage of negativity, commenters like Cory P thought it “refreshing to see a show that is so inclusive and is able to do so by following the source material” while CB N didn’t “get all the review bombs”, saying the “story didn’t feel forced, and action was acceptable”.
While many wish that the show bombs, they may not get their wish, at least not yet. In fact, theย Batwomanย pilot pulled in 1.8 million viewers on its initial airing and brought in a further 1.1 million on its Tuesday rerun.
