German police have apprehended a suspect in connection with a stabbing attack at Berlin’s Holocaust memorial that left a Spanish tourist seriously injured. Despite having the suspect in custody, police have not yet determined a motive for the attack, which took place just two days before Germany’s national election, causing additional turmoil around the event. The victim, an unnamed 30-year-old Spanish man, was left with serious injuries and taken to a nearby hospital to recover. It seems like the world never has a lack of individuals hoping to terrorize others.

According to the Guardian, a police spokesperson, Florian Nath, confirmed that the attack weapon had been seized at the same time as the suspect, though there hasn’t been an explanation as to what it could have been. Considering it was a stabbing at the memorial, it’s likely to have been a small blade. Concerning the suspect and his actions after the stabbing, Nath had this to say,

“He had blood on his hands and this made him very suspicious,”

The attack comes amid a tense national election campaign, with polls suggesting that a far-right party could secure second place for the first time in nearly 90 years. Considering the history of the country, there are many who are rightfully afraid of this potential turnout. The campaign has been marked by several violent incidents, including a different stabbing attributed to an Afghan immigrant, sparking an intense debate over immigration policies.

On the same day as the Holocaust memorial stabbing, German authorities also arrested an 18-year-old ethnic Chechen of a Northeast Caucasian group suspected of plotting an attack on the Israeli embassy in Berlin. Hopefully, the chaos going on right now in Germany will slow down in the coming days, especially after the public discovers the events of the election. May the injured gentleman make a swift recovery as well.
