THQ Nordic's Biomutant keeps looking better and better. The game's latest trailer has leapfrogged the game into one of the industry's most anticipated.
This article is over 4 years old and may contain outdated information.

Do you remember when THQ Nordic’s Biomutant was first announced back in 2017? It seems like an eon ago. The RPG about a mutated, furry martial artist has been delayed several times and we still don’t have a confirmed release date. That said, THQ Nordic and the game’s developer, Experiment 101, have dropped a new nine-minute trailer for Biomutant. Even though no exact date was stated, the trailer proves that the game is worth waiting for.

The recipe for a great game trailer isn’t like baking cookies. The “traditional formula” can be adjusted, deviated, or straight-up disregarded. A trailer could highlight gameplay, its world, or its characters. The latest Biomutant trailer checked all of the boxes and then some.

Biomutant

The Meat and Potatoes of Biomutant

Viewers saw an expanded open-world. There are vast open landscapes, tightly sealed combat arenas, and deserted towns. We learned a bit about world traversal. The player was seen riding unique creatures, including horse-like and blue moose-like animals. And, there is a Breath of the Wild-style hang glider that can be used to cross large distances.

Many epic boss battles were put on display and most of them were as ferocious looking as the open-world was beautiful. Some showed unique combat strategies. For example, one was entirely underwater, another incorporated a jet-ski battle, and another was reminiscent of God of War’s massive troll skirmishes.

Biomutant’s gameplay reminded me of many other open-world titles. There are outposts that players must conquer. There’s a diverse world to explore and a plethora of ways to do so. What separated Biomutant from the pack, however, was the impressiveness of its combat. Weapon customization is huge and it appears that it has the potential to make each player’s experience unique. Players will be able to switch combat styles on the fly, which is crucial because the battles themselves are fast-paced and dangerous. At times you’ll prefer melee attacks, but you’re always one dodge or one jump away from needing a ranged firearm.

No Release Date, but Definitely Worth the Wait

No new date was announced for the title. The only hint given by THQ Nordic and Experiment 101 was that the game was coming “when we are happy with it”. But, in fairness, that’s good enough. The game looks incredible and waiting for a better product is always the right way to go.

We can expect to play Biomutant on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC when the game does inevitably arrive.
