Black Ops 6 Audio Innovations Prioritizes What Call of Duty Players Really Need: ‘Down to the Smallest Details’

Even better than the Omnimovement

In collaboration with Microsoft’s Project Acoustics, Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 developers and audio designers have been working on making the in-game sounds feel as realistic as possible. This adds more fun to the story and Zombies side of the game, while for the competitive gameplay, Treyarch is making sure that you hear and “prioritize” the sounds you want in the game.

Audio and sound play a major role in shooter games, especially if you’re playing multiplayer. The sounds can guide you and help you to locate your opponents, giving you an opportunity to counterattack that one guy trying to finish you off from behind. Or they can mislead you into a trap, something that Warzone players have had some issues with in the past couple of years. MW3 fixed some of these foibles in 2023, and now it’s Treyarch’s turn to nail it.

According to a recent official post by Call of Duty, Black Ops 6 will deliver an immersive experience in the audio department with “the way that sound waves bounce and propagate through the world down to the smallest details like what materials are made of, the size and shape of the room, and what path the sound has to take to get from where it happened to where you’re hearing it.” On top of that, sound absorption plays a role in the game, like for example, snow stops soundwaves, while they reverberate off solid materials like trees.

Leaning towards audio realism is amazing for a shooter game, but what about Warzone and Multiplayer? For that, the innovation of Black Ops 6 audio settings has paved the way for hearing less combat noise and clearer footstep sounds. The sound of an enemy approaching your position will have higher priority among the other sounds in the game, which is just a big W for the developers and the CoD fanbase.

Players can change the Black Ops 6 audio settings at will to personalize and create a profile after tuning the options. This also includes the Head Related Transfer Function, which is enhanced audio settings for hearing directional sounds much better by adjusting the options based on the shape of your head and ear. Revolutionary!

All the Black Ops 6 audio settings and innovations are included in the game at launch on October 25, 2024, and they’ll be later integrated into Warzone in Season 1.

Amir is an absolute Call of Duty nerd, preferring shooter games more than everything. However, he does like to do uppercuts in Mortal Kombat and feel the NOS going through the engines in Need For Speed games.
