Theย Borderlandsย series is known for packing a lot of value for the buck. Bothย Borderlands 1 & 2 both received a ton of post-launch content – at least four sizable DLC expansions each, with a ton of other smaller content packs adding up to a healthy support post-release.ย Borderlands 3 is shaping up to be no different, and now the future is looking slightly sweeter as it will get a free next-generation upgrade, according to 2K and Gearbox.
The next-gen versions will sport nifty cross-save and cross-progression features, meaning anyone exploring the world of Pandora can just hop from one generation to the next and, in theory, continue right where they left off, shooting and looting tons of guns on their adventures. The newer versions will also support resolutions and frame rates up to 4K and 60fps. Cross-save is also coming later down the line, as is vertical split-screen.
Not much more is clear on what terms and conditions apply to this free upgrade, whether the cross-progression can apply to physical versions as well as their digital counterparts. However, we found out they only apply to transitions within the same console manufacturer (PS4 to PS5, XB1 to SX/S).
More and more developers and publishers are choosing to give gamers the option to upgrade for free this generation, so much so it’s starting to become expected. CD Projekt Red has revealed they’re doing the same with The Witcher 3, or Bethesda withย Doom Eternal and The Elder Scrolls Online, but some like EA, have imposed limits on their options to players.
Borderlands 3 may not have made quite the same impact as its predecessors – we had mixed opinions in our review – but the fourth latest DLC, Psycho Krieg and the Fantastic Fustercluck, has recently been released. Gearbox has also announced that they’re not done withย Borderlands 3ย support, although it won’t be on the same scale of the DLC expansions.
