Britain’s longest-serving monarch, Queen Elizabeth II, has died at 96. Queen Elizabeth ruled for seven decades but died peacefully in her sleep on September 8, 2022, bringing an end to her reign. Find out more details surrounding Queen Elizabeth’s death below.

A Peaceful Death

Earlier on Thursday, September 8, reports revealed Queen Elizabeth was in a grave condition. This came after doctors expressed concern about her health. More concerns about the monarch were raised after her family members rushed to be with her at her Scottish home, Balmoral Castle. Buckingham Palace also announced that Queen Elizabeth was under medical supervision at Balmoral Castle.

Later, The Royal Family announced Queen Elizabeth’s death via a statement that read:

“The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon. The King and The Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow.”

The statement means that Queen Elizabeth’s oldest son, Prince Charles, will automatically become the King.

Queen Elizabeth’s Recent Health Struggles

Before Queen Elizabeth’s death, there had been questions about her health. The deceased monarch’s royal duties were scaled back over the past year. Due to these health concerns, many of the trips the queen would normally have gone for were canceled without explanation.

The Queen‘s last public appearance was on Tuesday, September 6, when she met with the UK’s new prime minister, Liz Truss. In June, Queen Elizabeth II’s family and the country celebrated the Platinum Jubilee in honor of her 70th year on the throne.

The Queen’s Legacy

Queen Elizabeth ascended the throne at 25 following her father, King George VI’s passing in 1952. After taking on the mantle of leadership, Queen Elizabeth II oversaw many landmark achievements, including the decolonization of Africa, the Caribbean, and South Asian territories like Sri Lanka and Pakistan. Britain’s longest-serving monarch also weighed in multiple worldwide events over the years and left a lasting legacy in the monarchy. It is now expected that Britain will go into mourning for their beloved queen. May her soul rest in peace as Britain.
