The evolution of artificial intelligence in recent years is staggering to put it mildly. It seems that more and more people are investing money and resources in creating information vacuums, so that no one will ever need to read a book or attend a class again. At least, that’s what one student at UCLA in California thought, as he shared his final project and revealing it was done with the help of ChatGPT. If you were looking for a sign of the world turning into the Bad Place, this is it.
A video shows an unnamed student at the University of California, Los Angeles, displaying his laptop screen to the camera. However, the focus is not on the laptop itself but on the content displayed: a ChatGPT prompt and its corresponding response. Why is this particular prompt and response significant? It was the response that helped him pass his final project and graduate.
The video was part of the school’s graduation ceremony and was broadcast live, as well as on the large screens in the theatre where the ceremony took place. So, not only did we see that he cheated to graduate, but so did the entire school and the staff there. However, there has been no revocation of the degree, and UCLA has not commented on the situation. However, that doesn’t mean that they don’t plan to at some point in the future.
However, various commenters under the video had plenty to say, with one person putting it as plainly as possible, “Start eating healthy and working out because your future doctor is doing this same exact thing.”
While I hate to think that’s true, I can only imagine how many other students were able to graduate in the last few years for the same reason.
