The criticisms against Donald Trump are never-ending, with California’s Governor Gavin Newsom joining the voices against the POTUS. The politician refused to accept the president’s latest tariff proposal aimed at Hollywood. Trump shared his latest agenda in a recent Truth Social post, claiming the movie industry in America was “DYING a very fast death.”
The president believed other countries were drawing filmmakers and studios away from the US, leaving Hollywood and other areas “devastated.” Trump stressed that these issues were “a concerted effort by other Nations” and were, therefore, “a National Security threat.” To solve these alleged problems and threats, the POTUS proposed:
“A 100% Tariff on any and all Movies coming into our Country that are produced in Foreign Lands. WE WANT MOVIES MADE IN AMERICA AGAIN!”
Governor Gavin Newsom Not Impressed by Donald Trump’s Latest Tariff Proposal

Trump’s tariff proposal did not sit right with Governor Newsom and those in his administration. Bob Salladay, the California Rep’s senior advisor for communications, told Deadline they would not support the president. “We believe he has no authority to impose tariffs under the International Economic Emergency Powers Act since tariffs are not listed as a remedy under that law,” Salladay argued.
Critics echoed similar sentiments about Trump going on a power trip on Reddit, with many labeling him money-hungry. “He wants bribes just like he was able to make an exception for cell phones and other electronics,” someone claimed. Another agreed, declaring Governor Newsom was “right as always.” A third believed Trump was just getting started, writing:
“He wants to control the content….he can’t control creators outside the US, Republicans already censored [sic] porn websites in red states, your Netflix is next. VPN are next, look at what that bald 39-year-old said about schools l…..we are so f-cked.”
One Redditor suspected Newsom’s “no authority” argument wouldn’t stop Trump from pushing forward with his movie tariffs. They alleged the POTUS had illegally deported someone and refused to bring him back without suffering any consequences.
Trump Supporters Slammed Governor Newsom Following the Wildfires

Four months before Newsom and critics united against Trump, the California Governor faced backlash for his comments about the POTUS. We covered the story, reporting the former mayor of San Francisco was labeled a “failure” after criticizing Trump’s relief plans. During the wildfires in January, Newsom slammed the president’s disaster aid proposal as “delusional.”
Newsom believed Trump would hold back on disaster aid for California and bashed Trump’s ideals. “It’s so profoundly ignorant. And yet he absolutely believes it,” the California Governor quipped. His words sparked a wave of backlash from Trump critics who claimed he was the last person who could judge the president.
Comments like “Gavin Newsom is a failure” and “Newsom should resign” trended, with others blaming him for the disastrous wildfires. One critic found the timing of the Governor’s remarks problematic, stressing that “bozo” Newsom shouldn’t be doing a podcast amid the raging fires.
Will Donald Trump listen to the cries of Governor Gavin Newsom and critics, or will he push through with his movie tariffs?
