Activision is bringing microtransactions to their hit military shooter, Call of Duty: Black Ops 3.

Christened โ€œCall of Duty Points,โ€ this virtual currency allows players to purchase in-game currency with real world money. Players can use Call of Duty points to purchase Supply Drops for use in the multiplayer, or Liquid Divinum in Zombie Mode.

Currently, players can earn in-game currencies such as Cryptokeys, through playing the competitive multiplayer, and Vials of Liquid Divinum, earned through playing Shadows of Evil or The Giant Bonus Map. The items that you earn through Supply Drops of Gooblegums, which are unlocked through Cryptokeys and Vials of Liquid Divinum respectively, are the same if the Cryptokeys and Vials are bought with Call of Duty Points.

Activision is only implementing Call of Duty Points on the current generation versions of the game. Additionally, by simply playing the game, gamers can earn 200 Call of Duty Points for free.

In a community blog post from Activision, the post states that Call of Duty Points can be used โ€œfor other in-game content.โ€ It looks like Activision will gradually announce different and new perks that can be purchased with Call of Duty Points.

Here are the groups of Call of Duty Points you can buy, along with their respective price tags:

  • 200 Call of Duty points — $2
  • 1,100 Call of Duty points — $10
  • 2,400 Call of Duty points — $20
  • 5,000 Call of Duty points — $40

The timing may or may not be coincidental. In December, many outlets are winding down for the holidays and may or may not be able to fully comment on the new inclusion of microtransactions. While microtransactions are commonplace in the games industry today, it seems that the blog post was published to minimize the amount of backlash Activision is sure to come under for including microtransactions.
