Call of Duty Is Choosing Bundles Over The Story For Warzone

Let’s have no stories for a year.

Call of Duty: Warzone has been supporting the mainline stories since 2020, up until the release of MW3. Not only has Modern Warfare 3‘s  Campaign mode been criticized by fans and Kratos, the God of War himself, but it also ruined the narrative of Warzone. However, season 3 seemed like the perfect spot to return to delivering those high-quality story cuteness, which isn’t the case, sadly.

Let’s start with the story theme of the past couple of seasons of Call of Duty: Warzone. In season 1, we got Andre cutting loose from the prison somehow without further explanation, raiding Vondel and other maps. Season 1 Reloaded had nothing, and neither have further seasons.

Now we’re at Season 3, and guess who’s back? Vladimir Makarov! One of the most terrifying Call of Duty villains of all time. In the trailer, he’s attacking Rebirth Island with new comrades – who are the new operators in the game, of course – and then blowing up some of the well-known POIs like the Prison. But why? How? Does he even get a single line of dialogue to explain? Nope.

In fact, the trailer focuses most of its playtime on the new bundles, skins, and gameplay. Now, don’t get me wrong—a lot of people buy these cosmetics, and some of them look very cool to have in the game. What I’m looking for is Call of Duty’s lost identity. This series has its own stars like Captain Price, Makarov, and Ghost to focus on, and the story that ended halfway through MW3 is yet to be continued.

So what has happened is that we’ve got three Seasons of Warzone after the events of MW3, and there’s nothing we know about the game’s narrative. We have absolutely zero idea why there are zombies beneath Urzikestan, why Soap is still labeled “Active” in the operator’s menu, and what on earth Makarov and Perseus logos are doing on Rebirth Island.

This might be a disappointing conclusion, but this seems to be the way of Call of Duty: Warzone story going forward, at least until the final seasons this year. Perhaps there will be more to know when Black Ops Gulf War is teased, and more mysteries will reveal that game’s story with Warzone easter eggs and cutscenes. If not, well, it seems that Warzone has just dumped the story side of things after all.

Amir is an absolute Call of Duty nerd, preferring shooter games more than everything. However, he does like to do uppercuts in Mortal Kombat and feel the NOS going through the engines in Need For Speed games.
