Arguably the biggest gaming franchise, Call of Duty, is headed to mobile for free on October 1 with team deathmatch, free for all, search and destroy and battle royale.

The game will be available anywhere the App Store and Google Play are supported except Mainland China, Vietnam and Belgium in the hopes of making Call of Duty even more accessible. Chris Plummer, VP, Mobile at Activision, said this shared effort between Tencent and Activision promises not to deviate from the traditional gameplay you can expect from console and PC.

“We are delivering the definitive, first-person action experience on mobile with signature Call of Duty gameplay in the palms of your hands.”

In fact, players will see classic  Call of Duty maps, modes, weapons and characters from across the franchise. Some of the maps include Crash and Crossfire from Modern Warfare and Nuketown and Hijacked from Black Ops. Additionally, when players rank up, they can play as some famous characters across the various campaigns like John “Soap” MacTavish, Simon “Ghost” Riley and Alex Mason.

The mobile release also hopes to emulate the battle royale success for mobile. It will feature 100 players on new maps and vehicular combat. Battle royale can be played solo, with duos or with four people teams.

Call of Duty

This release comes after a beta, which ran through the summer. A recent press release states that the beta was helpful for getting the game ready for launch next month.

“We’ve tested the game extensively in select territories and the feedback we’ve received has helped us refine the experience for October 1.”

Major games have recently found success on mobile releases, especially when it comes to battle royale. Activision hopes to copy that success – not like Call of Duty is popular enough already.
