Despite not being available on other platforms besides the Nintendo Switch at the current moment (a PC version is in the works), it’s still an impressive feat that Capcom has managed to ship over 4 million copies of Monster Hunter Rise so far in just three days. Shipped figures aren’t the same as sold ones – it’s all the copies shipped to retailers and digital stores.

Monster Hunter Rise PC Port

The shipped figure of MH Rise has a fair bit to do with the reception of the previous game in the series, Monster Hunter World, and its expansion, Iceborne. That game was even more successful for Capcom, with around 5 million shipped not long after its own launch – although that was on both PS4 and Xbox One, two platforms with a massive combined market share, and not during a global pandemic where, in some places, retail shops are closed as part of lockdown procedures. The Switch isn’t doing bad on its own though. It recently outsold Sony’s PSP at the 81 million mark – not something to be sniffed at. MH World went onto sell 16.8 million copies globally – both the highest sales in the series and Capcom’s history – pushing the series’ sales total up to a commendable 66 million.

The other factor in Rise‘s success must be given to the quality of the game itself. It’s a shame that it’s currently only a Switch game, as many of the things that made World so great are still here, and while maybe some thought that the future of the Monster World franchise would be cross-platform beyond Nintendo, Capcom has (for now) kept Rise shackled within Switch exclusivity. If you have a Switch (and as the info above suggests, a lot of you do) then there’s every reason to check Monster Hunter Rise out – people dig it, certainly a lot more than the recent movie.

Do you think that the next game from Capcom in the Monster Hunter series will come to more platforms? Or do you think that it was a mere experiment, and that we shouldn’t get our hopes up too much? Leave a comment.
