Coleco, for those too young to be aware, was responsible for creating the ColecoVision in 1982.ย The ColecoVision was a popular home video game console, known for making very high quality ports of current arcade hits available to players at home.ย The ColecoVision was so highly regarded that in 2009 IGN rated the system the 12th best console of all time.
Coming as a shock to many, not only is Coleco still a meaningful entity and a functional company, but they have just announced their return to the video game console market with the Coleco Chameleon.ย The Coleco Chameleon is going to be a new cartridge-based video game console capable of playing 8, 16, and 32-bit video games, old as well as new.
The reports we are getting are mixed and unclear at this point.ย The Chameleon may be able to play games from other, older cartridge based systems like other โneo-retroโ consoles or it may simply be able to play all of the various games brought to the Coleco Chameleons physical cartridges.
At this time very little else is known about the console. There is no announcement of the price point yet, but Coleco is aiming for a commercial release sometime early next year, with the console being shown at Toy Fair, New York 2016.
