Cyberpunk Developer Settles Lawsuit Claiming Game Was ‘Unplayable’

CD Projekt Red admitted no wrongdoing in the settlement.

Cyberpunk 2077 developer CD Projekt Red has reportedly settled a lawsuit filed in 2020. The lawsuit claimed that the Polish development studio “made false and/or misleading statements and/or failed to disclose that Cyberpunk 2077 was virtually unplayable on the current-generation Xbox or Playstation systems.”

Cyberpunk 2077 has come a long way since its release back in late 2020. CD Projekt Red, coming hot off the massive success of The Witcher 3, had all eyes and the most hype of any title in the gaming industry at the time only to drop the ball in such an enormous way that it wound up being worthy of multiple lawsuits.

The confirmation recently came from IGN that CD Projekt Red has settled the lawsuit that was initially filed on December 24th, 2020 concerning the notorious console launch of Cyberpunk 2077. The game was infamously bug-ridden on both PC and console, but the console release of the game was so poorly optimized that PlayStation removed the title from its store entirely and refunded every player with it in their library at the time.

The settlement of this lawsuit means CD Projekt Red did not have to admit any wrongdoing and thus is cleared of any future legal issues relating to this case. It’s unknown the exact number the developer settled for this time around, but it’s already settled multiple lawsuits in the past relating to the launch of Cyberpunk 2077, including one earlier this year that resulted in a nearly $2 million dollar payout to investors that bought-in to the company in the months leading up to the game’s drop.

CD Projekt Red has come a long way with the game since its disastrous launch three years ago. The latest update and Phantom Liberty DLC addition make it feel like the game it was meant to be when it initially landed in consumers’ laps.
