Changing your party order in Darkest Dungeon 2 is one of the essential parts of gameplay that you must learn. Your party’s order will determine what skills they can use as well as which characters are targeted by an enemy’s attacks. Some Hero classes struggle if they leave their position, such as the Leper. There are also fights you know are coming up, like Lair Bosses, where you should reposition your party and take new skills to succeed. It’s easy to forget that it can be done outside of battle, but here’s what you must do to change your party order.

While traveling with the Stagecoach, you can drag the icons at the bottom of the screen to change the party order. You can do this while the Stagecoach is moving or standing still, but you can’t do it if you reach a destination. There are no limitations on the formation; the party order can be whatever you want it to be. If you are interrupted while changing the party order (like arriving at a battle), the order will be whatever it was before the interruption. Darkest Dungeon 2 is unforgiving, and you should change the party order before you do anything.

If you are changing someone’s position in combat, you need to select the circular arrows next to their skills. Not everyone has the same move distance and direction, so it is important to check a Hero’s movement before making the change. There are also skills that change a Hero’s position during combat, used by Heroes such as the Jester and Man-at-Arms. These can displace other Heroes and shift them out of position, which you should factor in before you make the change.

Changing your party’s order in Darkest Dungeon 2 is simple, but knowing when you can do it is helpful. Otherwise, you might find yourself at the mercy of moves that forcibly change your position. Fortunately, party order changes do not last outside of combat and will revert to your original formation after every battle. If you are unsatisfied with a Hero’s performance, you can always shift them around while traveling in the Stagecoach until you are happy with the result. This helps you adapt to upcoming situations and try out new skills that can confer an advantage.
