Dave the Diver Angers Fans with Time-Limited Yakuza Crossover DLC: ‘I’m Not Happy With FOMO’

Are we taking notes from Destiny 2?

To preface this news, Dave the Diver is actually one of the best games of 2023, and the casual single-player adventure RPG has won both awards and the praise of the gaming community. However, the game’s recent Ichiban’s Holiday collaboration DLC with SEGA’s Yakuza has angered and disappointed their fans, mainly because people can only buy it for six months before it disappears forever.

The Ichiban’s Holiday Content Pack was launched back on April 10 and features the titular Ichiban from the Yakuza franchise in a crossover in-game event for Dave the Diver. The DLC also costs around $7, more or less, depending on your location, though at the moment, it’s currently on sale until April 18.

Regardless of the sale, the DLC has a “Mixed” review rating on Steam, with many of the negative reviews citing the FOMO (fear of missing out) tactic employed by the devs. That’s because Ichiban’s Holiday will be time-limited and only available from April 10 to October 9, 2025, and afterward, it won’t be sold anywhere forever.

Outside of Steam, some of the Dave the Diver fans have gathered on the r/Steam subreddit to discuss their frustration with the time-limited DLC. Some have attempted to explain, saying that borrowing content licensed by other game franchises could be costly, which necessitates time limitations.

Not the First for Dave the Diver

Still, those who have been keeping track of Dave the Diver‘s numerous content updates were quick to point out that the game has also had time-limited DLCs in the past, notably the Godzilla crossover DLC. The big difference, however, was that the Godzilla DLC for Dave the Diver was free, and this time, they’re charging money for a time-limited DLC.

As for the content itself, many on the Steam review page have already praised the DLC, though it was rather short and only lasted one hour at most. Even so, some players who liked the content still rated the DLC negatively because of the FOMO tactic in place.

Some Have Resorted to Piracy

Of course, not everyone is without options, as some Dave the Diver fans on the r/Steam subreddit have declared that they can still get the DLC by pirating it. In fact, some players have also done that for the past Dave the Diver time-limited DLCs, even though they already own the game legitimately.

Others, however, have been turned off by developer Mintrocket’s practices, stating that they were going to buy the game initially, but after hearing its FOMO practices with DLC, they decided not to support it anymore.

“I think Steam should step in or at least prevent them calling these DLCs. Maybe calling them TL-DLC (time limited donwloadable content) or something totally different. But I’m not happy with FOMO reaching DLCs now,” suggested Redditor zex_99

“So only way to get it is by piracy? If you miss it… That’s stupid,” says Redditor AKJ90

“For this type of shit I’m not buying the game. Don’t care how good and chill it is, I’ll never support these practices,” according to Redditor Seibitsu
