This article is over 5 years old and may contain outdated information.

Death Stranding is the second biggest PS4 launch this year, according to Gamesindustry.biz. This is after the game debuted at second in the UK charts, behind Modern Warfare at first. The article also says that the data shows that Death Stranding is also the second biggest new IP released this year, behind Days Gone. Hideo Kojima’s newest project has sold 36% fewer units than the aforementioned game.

However, it is proof of a rise in popularity in Kojima’s work as the article states:

“It’s the first new game from Kojima since the release of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, which arrived in September 2015 and was the most successful Metal Gear Solid launch to-date.”

So, it goes to show that there is room for the auteur’s innovative but daunting games. And Death Stranding is helping to push forward that trajectory.

Death Stranding Soars Above Some Heavyweights

While it is unsurprising that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is remaining in first for its third consecutive week, it does seem unusual that Death Stranding is holding such a position. Maybe, it has something to do with the high level of marketing and star power surrounding it.

However, the game has knocked Nintendo’s Luigi’s Mansion 3 down to fourth in the charts. This is coupled with a decrease in sales by 59% this past week.

EA is also hanging around in the charts as the report says:

“Need for Speed is one of three EA games in the charts. FIFA 20 holds on at No.3, while Plants vs Zombies: Battle for Neighborville hangs on at No.10.”

The Need for Speed referenced is, of course, Need for Speed: Heat. Arriving in fifth, the game has sold 41% less boxed units than the launch of the 2017 entry in the franchise.

So, what do these statistics say about the importance of Death Stranding? One interpretation is that gamers from all walks of the spectrum are ready for new experiences. Even though the reviews have been somewhat mixed, the sales show a leap of faith from players that opens up the opportunity for fewer sequels and more original IP’s. Of course, Death Stranding may just become part of the sequel machine. Only time will tell!

Played Death Stranding? Think this is promising for the future of original IP’s? Let us know in the comments!
