Since Destiny’s launch in September 2014, it has been plagued with networking issues. Players would be disconnected in the middle of a strike or raid and would be booted to orbit. Bungie are launching a new patch sometime today and in the patch will be a new ‘connection recovery’ which will attempt to reconnect you into the lobby again without returning you to orbit.

On the weekly blog post, Bungie Matchmaking Engineer Damian Frank discussed the new feature.

“If you’ve played for long enough, you’ve probably been kicked back to orbit at some point, This happens when basic network problems occur on the Internet. If you can’t talk to our servers because some network router somewhere got too busy, you may be kicked to orbit. We’ve been working hard on improving this aspect of the player experience”

Stop disconnecting or we'll fry you!
Ooh! Burn!

Frank then went on to explain why this new patch will help with disconnection’s.

“Connection Recovery will leap into action and attempt to reconnect you. It won’t always work, because the underlying networking problem may be too severe, but it gives you a fighting chance at rejoining the server you were playing on. If it’s successful, you’ll keep your progress and your Fireteam”

So how do you know if you will get reconnected or just plain booted to orbit? When you get disconnected you will receive a black screen with a message stating that Bungie are trying to reconnect you. If this is successful then you will respawn a few moments later. If it fails then unfortunately you will be returned to orbit and will have to reconnect.

The feature will roll out next week alongside Destiny’s DLC, The House Of Wolves. Unfortunately this new feature will only be trialed on The Trials Of Osiris, but if successful Bungie will roll it out across all matchmaking services.

With the wolves comes better server stability (hopefully).

Have you quit playing because of server issues? Are you likely to come back once the patch goes live and try again? Let us know in the comments.
