Diablo 4: Vessel of Hatred Confirms Our Biggest Fear for the Story

Apply Soulstone directly to forehead

One year after Diablo 4‘s release, Blizzard has finally announced and revealed Diablo 4: Vessel of Hatred, its first expansion. Diablo 4: Vessel of Hatred was revealed via a story trailer during Summer Game Fest 2024.

As usual, Blizzard kills it again with their cinematics, but the honeymoon phase might be short-lived as Diablo 4: Vessel of Hatred‘s trailer more or less confirms our biggest fears.

Neyrelle’s whereabouts are undoubtedly the highlight of the Diablo 4: Vessel of Hatred trailer. She’s taken a boat somewhere safe, but it appears her safety might be short-lived. Mephisto’s Soulstone– the one she absconded with (or stole), is about to break Neyrelle and take control of her.

Based on the premise of Diablo 2 and Diablo 3— well, we all know what happens when a mortal gets in contact with a Prime Evil’s Soulstone. Neyrelle may very well become the next villain or the next vessel for Mephisto. At least that’s what the trailer was teasing.

Our Main Quest Questions Have Been Answered

It’s worth noting that Diablo 4 ended with a huge cliffhanger. The aforementioned Neyrelle took Mephisto’s Soulstone for herself after the players defeated Lilith, Mephisto’s daughter. Players were then left to question Neyrelle’s true intentions and whereabouts.

For a long time, this hanging conclusion became a rather buzzing subject of speculation for the Diablo 4 community. Many even doubted Neyrelle’s goal– that perhaps her intention for absconding with the Soulstone was out of demonic hypnosis.

The Vessel of Hatred trailer has shown that Neyrelle’s intent was noble and true, of course. It’s just that her control is slipping.

For those of you who haven’t played Diablo 2 or Diablo 3, it’s common knowledge for the fanbase that the Soulstones of the Prime Evils will always try to snatch and transform a mortal vessel so they can roam around freely in Sanctuary. In fact, Diablo 2‘s Diablo was once the Warrior character from the first game who got corrupted.

Meanwhile, Diablo 3‘s Diablo was once a girl not unlike Neyrelle. Already, the expansion’s title, “Vessel” of Hatred is telling. Mephisto is the Lord of Hatred, after all, and he’s itching to get out of his Soulstone prison– all he needs is a vessel.

Neyrelle, in her naivete, might have played right into Mephisto’s hands. For all we know, we might get another Diablo 3 storyline in Diablo 4: Vessel of Hatred.
