As per Kaiser499 on Twitter, Diablo II’s long-anticipated remaster, Diablo II Resurrected, is to be unveiled at BlizzCon 2021. This year’s event will be entirely online due to COVID-19 restrictions and will take place from February 19-20.

While fans are skeptical of the information, Kaiser499 is considered a credible source. They rightly predicted the reveal of both Overwatch 2 and Diablo IV back at BlizzCon 2019. It’s also worth noting that this revelation comes just behind Blizzard Entertainment’s own blunder in leaking their BlizzCon 2021 press kit which confirmed at least one of Kaiser499’s predictions—The Burning Crusade expansion for World of Warcraft Classic.
Still, fans are left wondering what form the game will take?
After all, GameSpot’s coverage of ExileCon 2019 informed us that Erich Schaefer, project lead for Diablo II, admitted that they lost a lot of the original files due to corruption:
We lost a lot of the assets, art assets. It would make it very difficult for Blizzard to do a Diablo II remaster because all the assets we used are pretty much gone. They’d have to make them from scratch.”
This suggests that should Diablo II Resurrected be revealed at BlizzCon 2021 tomorrow, the project will take on a different form than a simple remaster. With many of the assets having to be made from scratch, fans should expect a complete revamping of the game’s aesthetic with the possibility of new content as well. For die-hard fans awaiting a faithful remake, this might come as an unwelcome reminder. However, if you were looking forward to Blizzard bringing new life to Diablo II, it seems to be a certainty.
