A woman bound to a wheelchair in Georgia went to seek care at a medical center and ended up living out a nightmare. The Atlanta resident, named Ankita Mackin, is currently battling multiple sclerosis. Sheโs been in a wheelchair for four years following her diagnosis. Sadly, instead of being cared for, she was abandoned at the facility and forced to find a way to get help. Unfortunately, it was hours before she was rescued.
It all played out when Ankita was placed in an exam room and put on a table inside. After waiting for a while, it was clear that no one was coming to help her. She later discovered that the staff at the Georgia medical center had closed the office and gone home for the day without realizing that she was still in the room.
Ankita’s MS diagnosis made it difficult for her to get off of the table. She finally found a way to roll off the table and crawl to reach out for help. The woman tells 9 News that she was dropped off at 2 p.m. for an appointment to get her feet fitted for braces. She was treated and the staff were supposed to call for a transportation service to take her home. However, that wasn’t the case.
Wheelchair Bound Georgia Woman Locked In Medical Faclity After Staff Goes Home
โIโm thinking that, ‘OK, well they know Iโm finished so theyโre going to call transportation to come back and get me,’โ she told the news outlet. โThe door is open the whole time,โ she said. โSo, Iโm waiting, waiting, waiting, waiting, I done fell asleep, woke up, Iโm like hmmโฆitโs almost four oโclock.โ
The clinic closes at 4 p.m., and it was by the time that Ankita realized what was happening: the office was closing. She says she yelled out for a doctor or nurse, but got no reply, and quickly worried that she was locked inside the building, which is exactly what happened to her.
The Georgia patient says that her phone was dead, and when she rolled off of the exam table she injured herself. โI just rolled on off, hit the floor, hit my head, hurt my back,โ Mackin said, adding that the maneuver left her legs in immense pain.
Finally, she was able to contact her daughter and the fire department forced their way into the building to free her from the scary situation.
Of course, the internet was shocked by the story. “Knowing they deal with disabled patients .. EVERY ROOM SHOULD BE CHECKED AND CLEANED AFTER EVERY PATIENT,” one person commented on TikTok. “Please lawyer up. This is unacceptable,” another stated. “Shameful,” a third agreed.
Hopefully, this Georgia woman can recover from the injuries and trauma that being trapped in the medical facility has caused her, and the staff learn to check all of the rooms before closing the office for the day.
