Don’t be scared of leaving early

First welcomed as a helpful tool, watch as a family fights against a malicious household AI assistant in Afraid. Written and directed by Chris Weitz (About a Boy), the film stars John Cho (Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle), Katherine Waterston (Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them), Keith Carradine (Deadwood), and Havana Rose Liu (Bottoms). As it is a horror movie you might be wondering if Afraid has anything extra at the end of the film that sets up a sequel. So, let’s see whether or not Afraid has a post-credits scene.ย

Is There a Post-Credits Scene in Afraid?

If the idea of a killer house assistant made you want to rush home and check on your devices, you’ll need to wait a little bit longer to leave the theater, because Afraid does have a post-credits scene. It’s a fairly short scene, and it occurs shortly after the main credits begin. It doesnโ€™t add much to the filmโ€™s narrative, and it isnโ€™t overly funny, but you wonโ€™t need to wait long to watch it if you want to. So, if you want to see everything Afraid has to offer, you’ll want to stay in your seat until that short scene is finished.

After the post-credits scene, no extra stingers or end-credits scenes tee up an Afraid sequel. It ends in a way that doesn’t leave room for a sequel, although you can imagine what would happen after the ending. Afraidโ€™s story is self-contained and straightforward, so there isn’t much need for a continuation. On the other hand, a prequel might prove more interesting. The story doesnโ€™t delve too deeply into the AIโ€™s (AIA) creation, which could be a good direction to explore.

Ultimately, not every film needs a sequel, and Afraid is fine as a standalone horror outing. It does have some box office potential, as Alien: Romulus, It Ends With Us, and Deadpool and Wolverine are all going strong. Perhaps a smaller horror film like Afraid could be just the thing to grab audiences’ attention away from the other titles. Afraid has a reported budget of $12 million, so it wonโ€™t need to do Romulus numbers to come out on top. But, weโ€™ll need to wait and see.ย

You can meet AIA yourself when Afraid comes to theaters on August 30, 2024.
