Freaky Friday is coming back, and Nisha Ganatra will be at its helm. Fans have been pushing for a sequel to the hit 2003 movie for nearly two decades, and Freaky Friday 2 has finally gotten the go-ahead. Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis are reportedly in talks to reprise their roles in the sequel, and Nisha Ganatra has been tapped to direct. Ganatra’s resume includes episodes of Welcome to Chippendales, Dollface, and Brooklyn Nine-Nine, so it’ll be interesting to see what kind of a twist she can put on a wacky body-swap comedy hitting screens nearly twenty-five years after Freaky Friday made its unforgettable debut.

What Is Nisha Ganatra Bringing to the “Freaky Friday” Sequel?

Released by Walt Disney Pictures in 2003, Freaky Friday tells the story of Tess Coleman (Jamie Lee Curtis), an overworked, uptight psychiatrist trying to balance the release of her new book with her upcoming wedding. Her teenage daughter Anna (Lindsay Lohan) is a rebellious musician, and the pair’s varying perspectives leave them almost constantly at odds with one another. When a freak accident with a fortune cookie causes Tess and Anna to switch bodies for a day, they’re forced to walk a mile in each other’s shoes. Tess gains some insight into her daughter’s struggles with bullying, while Anna gains an appreciation for her mother’s stresses about getting re-married.

Freaky Friday (2003) is based on Mary Rodger’s 1972 novel of the same name, and it’s technically the third adaptation of the novel, after the 1976 movie and 1995 TV movie. A sequel to the 2003 movie has been rumored to be happening for a long time, but it’s just now getting off the ground. We’re looking forward to see if Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan will be returning, but for now, all we know is that Nisha Ganatra’s going to be in the director’s chair.

Ganatra seems to be a good fit for the sequel to one of the wackiest comedies of the early 2000s, with her prior track record including Welcome to Chippendales, Dollface, And Just Like That…, and Brooklyn Nine-Nine. In 2021, she received a Primetime Emmy nomination for her work on Transparent and won multiple awards for Chutney Popcorn. Her most recent project is Dear Edward, an Apple TV+ series starring Colin O’Brien and Taylor Schilling.

More information on the Freaky Friday sequel will likely become available as production continues.
