Donald Trump continues to spark criticisms for his administration, with his latest proposal leaving many displeased. The POTUS took to his Truth Social platform on Sunday night to share his plans for Alcatraz prison. He revealed he not only planned on reopening the infamous island as a penitentiary but also rebuilding it.
“We will no longer be held hostage to criminals, thugs, and Judges that are afraid to do their job and allow us to remove criminals who came into our Country illegally,” Trump stressed in his post. He noted his plans were crucial for Alcatraz to “house America’s most ruthless and violent Offenders.”
The notorious island located in the waters off San Francisco, California, was run by the Department of Justice from 1934 to 1963. As a federal prison, Alcatraz housed some of the most infamous criminals in American history, including George ‘Machine Gun’ Kelly. However, it was shut down due to high restoration and maintenance costs.

In his motion for Alcatraz’s reopening, Trump noted the notorious prison remains “a symbol of Law, Order and JUSTICE.” He stressed that rebuilding and reopening the island would benefit Americans regardless of the financial costs. Unfortunately for the POTUS, many did not resonate with his arguments.
Several people expressed disbelief over his post on X, implying the politician has gone off the rails. “The cost of getting it functional for prisoners, housing for the staff, as well as the cost of transportation on and off it? Absolutely a waste of money. He wants the symbol at the cost of taxpayers,” someone argued.
Others echoed similar sentiments, referencing Trump’s status as the first U.S. president to be convicted of a felony. “Obsessed with prisons because that is where he should be,” a critic noted. Another agreed, advising Trump to rename Alcatraz after himself and save a cell for his future incarceration.

Last month, Trump sent critics into a heated frenzy following his desire to send American criminals to El Salvador. We covered the story, reporting the POTUS praised the country’s infamous Terrorism Confinement Center, also known as CECOT. He praised El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele for the supermax prison system, saying:
“We’re using his system because we’re getting rid of our criminals from out of the United States that were allowed to come in by Biden.”
According to Trump, he would “love” to send “homegrown” criminals to CECOT. He described these offenders as people who were born and raised on American soil before something turned them violent. However, the term did not sit right with many, who criticized the politician for abusing his power.
“We are in a constitutional crisis, and this is fascism. If we don’t call this out and stop it now, it will never stop,” someone argued. Another believed Trump would label anyone he didn’t like a “homegrown” criminal to kick them out of the country. A third claimed the POTUS’s proposal would be an “abduction” of American citizens, not deportation.
