Things are getting intense in Drake‘s ongoing case against his record label, including the criticisms. Champagne Papi has received approval to access sensitive documents from Universal Music Group (UMG) for his ongoing case. He seeks details about Lamar’s contract and executive salary information. The singer claimed the song promotes a malicious narrative that he is a pedophile.

The rapper’s action comes after Judge Jeannette A. Vargas ruled against UMG’s attempt to dismiss the case. The label described his lawsuit as an “illogical” effort to stifle artistic expression and requested a pause in the discovery process while the dismissal motion was considered. With the new judgment, Drake’s legal team can now pursue the documents they believe UMG is trying to conceal.

Drake’s lead attorney, Michael Gottlieb, expressed satisfaction with the decision, indicating it was time to uncover UMG’s secrets. His team seeks UMG & Kendrick Lamar contracts and senior staff incentive plans from 2020. UMG has objected to the requests, stating that gathering commercially sensitive information would be costly and time-consuming. Per BBC, a hearing on the motion to dismiss is set for June 30.

There seems to be a strong sentiment in the online discourse surrounding Drake’s action on Reddit. Many users expressed criticisms about his authenticity in the hip-hop genre. A commenter feels he is out of touch with the culture. They labeled him as overly sensitive and referred to him as the “biggest b-tch in rap history.” They added:

“What does he think he’s gonna accomplish? Let’s say he finds some gotcha technical bs to sue Kendrick for, literally nobody is gonna give a f-ck. They’re just gonna chant A Minor.”

There are also suggestions that Drake should consider establishing his own record label. His trust in corporate partnerships may be waning following recent events. A commenter noted that Drake typically favors artistic methods over confrontational ones in his music. Another user reiterated the growing perspective that Drake is a “hip-hop culture vulture.”

Other Reddit users reinforced their negative perceptions about Drake’s response to the beef. One commenter tried to educate people that Lamar is not being sued. Another user mocked him for failing to find “any dirt on Kendrick, even with his backing and connections.” The sentiment is a mix of disdain and disbelief at Drake’s current standing in hip-hop.

In March, we reported that Universal Music Group publicly criticized Drake for filing a lawsuit against them. The label accused the rapper of being unnecessarily dramatic and condemned his lack of guts. The controversy erupted after Lamar released his commercially successful diss track. The father of one claimed UMG released the music despite knowing it contained false and defamatory statements about him.

UMG then replied by filing its legal documents against Drake. The label insisted that Drake made matters by releasing a follow-up track to pressure Lamar into responding. UMG highlighted that both artists had exchanged nine songs targeting each other. The label noted that the Canadian star also used UMG’s platform to promote his tracks, criticizing Lamar. UMG further alleged that Drake’s insults included accusations of domestic abuse against Lamar.

The label added that the Canadian rapper also made insinuations about the paternity of Lamar’s child. UMG contends that the God’s Plan hitmaker is only pursuing legal action now that he has lost the rap battle. UMG claimed that many commentators declared Lamar the ‘winner’ of the fight, significantly damaging Drake’s reputation.

What will June 30 bring for Drake and UMG? Time will tell!
