The modern format for most action movies involves either a trilogy or copious amounts of unnecessary sequels, but it seems Edge of Tomorrowโs sequel wonโt follow that trend. The film’s director, Doug Liman revealed that the Edge of Tomorrow 2 will complete the franchise, ending it at just two films.
Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt are set to return for the next installment as futuristic soldiers Bill Cage and Rita Vrataski, but Liman announced that a third main character will be introduced as well. While appearing on the MTV HSC Podcast, the director stated that the sequel wonโt feature as much action as the first, with the original acting as a โsort of the ad campaignโ for Edge of Tomorrowโs sequel, giving time to focus on the three main characters.
โWe can do way more focus on Tomโs character and Emily Bluntโs character, and thereโs a third character in the sequel thatโs gonna for sure steal the movie. We can focus on that. I donโt need an action sequence every two minutes.โ
Liman goes on to say that Edge of Tomorrow has been a two movie franchise from the outset, with the first one establishing the relationship between Cruise and Bluntโs characters. In regards to just whatโs in store for fans in the next iteration, he described the plot as โa sequel thatโs a prequel.โ
Given the non-linear, wonky timeline mechanics introduced in the first film, that statement could mean any number of different things. Either way, itโs refreshing to see that the franchise has a specific plan and isnโt going to create more content than necessary to tell the story that it wants to tell.
