Ex-Bungie Dev Accused Leadership of Ruining Studio From Within: ‘Everything Happening is Because of Greed’

Your prophets are making a big mistake

For years, gamers have speculated about ‘executives’ and ‘higher-ups’ boogiemen, whose profit-driven business decisions wreak havoc on beloved studios. In the case of Bungie, however, that myth of leadership ruining a studio appears to be a shocking truth. The renowned developer behind Destiny and the upcoming Marathon is now facing a wave of criticism. Not only for recent art theft allegations, but also from a growing chorus of disgruntled former employees.

The scoop comes from YouTuber Destin Legarie, who said he interviewed several former Bungie developers. What started as a dive into the studio’s new ‘Art Raiders’ nickname — a play on art theft claims and rival ARC Raiders — seemed straightforward at first. But the investigation quickly turned into something else entirely.

“If they didn’t think of it, it wasn’t worth doing,” claimed one of Destin’s anonymous sources. ‘They’ here refers to Bungie executives. Another former developer accused that team leaders were ‘toxic’ and often shut down creatives on a core level. The YouTuber described the studio as a ‘cool kids club’, just like Overwatch‘s Blizzard. Staff either agreed with leadership’s vision, or ‘put on a list, paraded publicly,’ and told their ideas ‘didn’t matter.’

Former Bungie sources argued that the company’s vision took a 180 during the PlayStation acquisition. The studio no longer prioritizes ‘games and players,’ but its attention shifted to ‘company, product, and customers.’

For example, an executive planned to add a subscription fee to Destiny, and the team was forced to vehemently fight to shut down the idea. Another higher-up was worried that a Trials of Osiris PvP armor was too ‘attractive’ and would heavily lessen sales on the premium Eververse store. “Everything happening to Bungie is because of greed,” said a source.

To make things worse, there are claims that Bungie executives were given ‘multi-million dollar penthouses’ to crash. Some even believed that the studio was footing the bill, despite it laying off 220 developers in 2024. Many also universally blamed a specific ex-HR employee who allegedly covered up harassment issues for a ‘multi-million dollar exit.’

Still, it’s not all doom and gloom. Most Bungie leadership, including the ones ruining the studio, seemed to have been assigned to handle Marathon and any fiasco that surrounds it. Many vouched for Eric Osborne, Lewis Vagos, and Joe Blackburn as well, saying they care a lot about their staff. But that also meant that some higher-ups, such as ones from Sony, with ‘little or no game development experience’, took the now-empty seats.

“All of this has caused structural issues that severely undermined the studio’s culture, decision-making, and the final product,” declared a former employee. For more shocking details, you can watch Destin Legarie’s video above.
